The safety of Herkimer County Community College's students, faculty, staff and visitors is a high priority at the College. Preserving the safety and well-being of each member of the HCCC community is the professional responsibility of the Department of Campus Safety and of other administrative departments. It is also a matter of mutual support, caring and caution by all members of the campus community. Students, faculty, staff and visitors can do much to aid the work of Campus Safety and to protect themselves and their property. We are fortunate at HCCC that we have experienced very little crime, but we all share in the responsibility of making the learning and working environment at HCCC safe and enjoyable for everyone.

The goals of Campus Safety are to provide protection for all students, faculty, staff and visitors to HCCC, to safeguard all real and personal property, and to enforce College policies and regulations.

The Campus Safety Department includes a Director, Assistant Director, nine full-time and six part-time Safety Officers. Campus Safety provides continuous patrols of the campus and Campus Meadows /College Hill housing complex by uniformed Safety Officers 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

AED EPI-PEN Officers are trained in specific areas that concern the College environment. CPR, first aid, emergency response procedures, cultural diversity and sexual assault response are some of the topics included in training. All HCCC Safety Officers comply with the licensing, registration, and training requirements of the New York State Security Guard Act.

Members of Campus Safety do have Peace Officer status, as defined in the New York State Criminal Procedure Law, and therefore do have the power to make arrests on campus.

Campus Safety has a cooperative working relationship with the Herkimer Police Department, Herkimer County Sheriff's Department and other area law enforcement agencies to help maintain a safe campus atmosphere.

If an accident occurs that we believe may have an effect on the safety and well being of the members of our college community, information concerning this matter will be distributed by way of paper flyer, on-campus electronic bulletin and college Intranet site.

Information concerning registered sex offenders is available in the Director of Campus Safety's office.

A copy of the Herkimer County Community College campus crime statistics as reported annually to the U.S. Department of Education will be provided upon request by the Campus Safety Committee. Please direct all such requests to the Office of the Dean of Students at (315) 866-0300, Ext. 8276. Information can also be obtained from the U.S. Department of Education website at http://ope.ed.gov/security/.

Information and Assistance

The Campus Safety Office is located in the main lobby of the College Center and someone is available at all times to render assistance. Reports may be made directly to the office, through the information booth or an officer may be dispatched to your location. Campus Safety Officers will provide assistance and will also assist you in reporting the incident to the Herkimer Police Department if it is deemed necessary.

If you have been the victim of sexual assault, you may report the incident to Campus Safety or to one of the College Counselors. The College Counselors can be reached at 866-0300, ext. 8284, or in the McLaughlin College Center, room 261. Your well-being is their primary concern. They will treat you with respect, sensitivity and will keep your concerns in strict confidence.

The Counseling staff at HCCC is committed to assisting students with their adjustments to college life. Trained counselors are available for confidential individual screening appointments with all students. We encourage you to become familiar with their service and visit anytime you need someone to talk to.

Helpful information is the type of crime, exact location where it occurred, dates/times when it occurred, why you suspect crime is being committed, and the name(s) of suspects. If suspect(s) are unknown, please give a description. Photos may also be emailed to silentwitness@herkimer.edu.

Blue Light Emergency Phones

Outdoor emergency phones are located in various locations on campus. They are marked by BLUE LIGHTS above the phone. Pushing the emergency button inside the emergency telephone box immediately connects you to 911.

HCCC Student Nighttime Auxiliary Program (SNAP)

HCCC Student Nighttime Auxiliary Program (SNAP) is a new initiative designed to provide additional eyes and ears for the Campus Safety department. College work-study and criminal justice students are available to provide students, faculty, staff and community members with a two-person walking escort on-campus. The service is available from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. SNAP members also observe and report incidents that may require attention of an officer via portable radio directly. They do NOT initiate any type of security/safety actions aside from their observations/reports. SNAP members are easily identifiable because they wear red jackets and orange vests. Members of the campus community are encouraged to use SNAP during operational hours. To request a SNAP escort, call Campus Safety at ext. 8616.

NY Alert Emergency Notification System

All HCCC students, faculty and staff are encouraged to sign up for NY Alert, a newly launched statewide emergency notification system. An initiative of the Governor’s Office, NY Alert allows you to sign up to receive emergency alert messages, originating from the State Emergency Management Office or from our own campus, via email, cell phone, text message and fax. You are allowed to choose any or all of these methods and to list up to two email addresses and three cell phone numbers. It is recommended that if you request text messages, you also select one of the other methods, as there are limitations to the text message option.

Faculty and students will be given the option to sign up for NY Alert upon logging into Self Service Banner (Student Online Services). College staff who do not have a Banner ID will sign up at www.suny.edu/sunyalertsec with the same username and password used to log into your HCCC computer account. You will then select the method(s) by which you would like to receive alert messages and the related contact information.
