  • Kelcy Newman & Eri Akiyama received the 2008 Academic All-Region award. This honor is given by NJCAA Region III to athletes who have earned at least 45 credit hours and a grade point average of 3.5 or better.
  • “HCCC received the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup award for its second place national finish among non-scholarship Division III community college athletic programs in 2007-2008…. The Generals earned 143 points for national placements in women’s and men’s cross country, women’s and men’s bowling, women’s and men’s swimming, women’s and men’s track and field, women’s and men’s lacrosse and men’s soccer.”

Wheeler Named to Green and Gold Club

Swim team captain James Wheeler was named to the Green and Gold Club for the month of February. Wheeler holds 13 school records, several of which he has set this season. He placed first in the 200 yard backstroke and 200 yard individual medley event at the Mountain Valley Conference Championship Meet. At the Region III/Northeast District Championships, he placed seventh in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke. Coach Vicki Brown said “James is a huge asset to our team. He sets a good example in practice by working hard and encouraging his teammates to do the same. James pushes himself and others to achieve their best and never gives up.”  Wheeler is a graduate of Holland Patent High School.

March 5-8, 2008

The men’s and women’s swim team traveled to Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce, Florida to compete in the 2008 NJCAA Swimming & Diving & Diving National Championships.

Top Finishes for the Women’s Team:

Kelcy Newman: 5th place in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:18.51. She set a new school record in the morning prelim event with a time of 1:17.68.10th place in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:54.70, setting a new school record.

Eri Akiyama: 7th place in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:46.62.11th place in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 6:02.21.

Top Finishes for the Men’s Team:

Tim Manoogian: 9th place in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.19, setting a new school record.

Bryan Koscinski: 15th place in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:34.90.

At Nationals, Manoogian also set a new Mountain Valley Conference record in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.19.

Swim Coach Vicki Brown said “Considering the high caliber of athletes and teams we compete with at the national level, I am extremely pleased and proud of our accomplishments. The HCCC swim team had a successful weekend at Regionals with Tim Manoogian winning a regional championship in the 100 yard breaststroke and Kelcy Newman winning the 100 yard and 200 yard breastrokes. "Our swimmers worked incredibly hard to get here and it sure did pay off," said Coach Vicki Brown.

February 2, 2008

The Herkimer Generals men’s and women’s swim team finished their regular season at SUNY Delhi for the Mountain Valley Conference Championships. Tim Manoogian and Eri Akiyama swam to best times in the 100 yard breaststroke and 400 yard individual medley, respectively. Tim, Eri and James (200 yard backstroke) swam to three new school records in their individual events. The Herkimer Generals have a week and a half break from competition as they prepare for Regionals to be held at Monroe Community College, February 15-17.

January 26, 2008

The men’s and women’s swim team traveled to SUNY Delhi for the annual Delhi Distance Invitational on Saturday, January 26, 2008. Tim Manoogian swam to an exciting first place finish in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.02, setting a new school record. He also set a new school record in the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 55.77. Eri Akiyama also posted best times in the 400 yard individual medley (6:078.95) and the 200 yard butterfly (2:48.85), setting two new school records. James Wheeler shattered his old school record in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:39.33 - dropping 14.5 seconds. Kelcy Newman placed 2nd in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:58.92, once again, setting a new school record. And last, but certainly not least, Bryan Koscinski swam against tough competition to finish the meet in third place in the 200 yard breaststroke event.

January 23, 2008

The Herkimer Generals men’s and women’s swim teams traveled to SUNY Cobleskill for their Spring Invitational. Eri Akiyama swam to a first place finish in the 100 yard butterfly with a new personal best time. Herkimer's teams proved, once again, that they are the powerhouses in the 100 yard breaststroke event, placing first and second on the men’s side (Tim Manoogian and Bryan Koscinski) and first and third on the women’s side (Kelcy Newman and Eri Akiyama). Two new school records were also set: Bryan Koscinski in the 200 yard individual medley and Eri Akiyama in the 100 yard butterfly.

December 14, 2007

Two Herkimer County Community College student-athletes were selected for the College’s Green and Gold Club for the month of November.

Freshman swimmer Kelcy Newman, Newport, NY, was the female selection. Newman has set two school records, in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke, so far this season. She also has swam to three first-place finishes, two in the 100-yard breaststroke and one in the 200-yard breaststroke and has qualified for nationals in four events (100 and 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle).

Swim coach Vicki Brown said “Kelcy brings strength and incredible Swimming & Diving technique to the team. She will prove to be a strong contender at the regional and national levels.”

Men’s basketball player Akeem Flagg was also named to the Green and Gold Club. A senior from Utica, Flagg helped lead the Generals to a 7-2 record during the month of November, with an average of 14.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.  Flagg led the team in a 76-74 conference win over Schenectady County Community College with 17 points, 15 rebounds and seven steals.

“Akeem has a lot of potential.  If he continues to work hard on and off the court, he will have many opportunities when he graduates from Herkimer,” said coach Matt Lee.

HCCC’s Green and Gold Club honors an outstanding male and female athlete each month.

December 8, 2007

The HCCC swim team competed in their home pool. The Lady Generals swam to five exciting first place finishes by Eri Akiyama (100 yard butterfly), Erin Moloney (100 yard freestyle) and Kelcy Newman (200 yard and 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard breaststroke). For the men, James Wheeler swam to two second place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke. Tim Manoogian and Bryan Koscinski proved Herkimer will be the team to beat in the breaststroke events by placing one, two. Joe Lehner swam to a third place finish in the 100 yard freestyle event.

In addition to these great swims, the following swimmers made national qualifying times: James Wheeler (100 yard backstroke and 50 yard freestyle), Erin Moloney (100 yard freestyle), Kelcy Newman (50 yard freestyle), Bryan Koscinski (50 yard freestyle and 100 yard breaststroke) and Tim Manoogian (50 yard freestyle and 100 yard breaststroke). Five new school records were set: men’s 200 yard medley relay, men’s 200 yard freestyle relay, men’s and women’s 100 yard breaststroke (Tim Manoogian and Kelcy Newman) and men’s 100 yard backstroke (James Wheeler).

The HCCC swim team is back in action on January 23, 2008.

December 1, 2007

The HCCC swim team traveled to SUNY Delhi for their annual Fall Invitational. The Lady Generals brought home two first place finishes by Eri Akiyama and Kelcy Newman in the 100 yard butterfly and 100 yard breaststroke, respectively. Tim Manoogian also swam to an exciting third place finish in the 50 yard freestyle.

The following swimmers made national qualifying times: James Wheeler (50 yard freestyle), Kelcy Newman (100 yard breaststroke), Eri Akiyama (100 yard butterfly and 200 Individual Medley), Bryan Koscinski (100 yard breaststroke) and Tim Manoogian (50 yard freestyle). The men’s 200 medley and freestyle relay teams both qualified for Nationals. The relay teams consisted of fast swims by James Wheeler, Tim Manoogian, Bryan Koscinski and Joey Lehner.

Five new school records were set: men’s 200  yard medley relay, men’s 200 yard freestyle relay, men’s and women’s 100 yard breaststroke (Bryan Koscinski and Kelcy Newman) and women’s 100 yard butterfly (Eri Akiyama).

The HCCC swim team competes at home on Saturday, December 8, 2007 for their final meet of the semester.

November 17, 2007

The HCCC swim team traveled to SUNY Cobleskill for the annual Donald Macomber Starting Block Invitational. The Generals brought home two first place finishes by Eri Akiyama and Kelcy Newman in the 200 yard butterfly and 200 yard breaststroke, respectively. Bryan Koscinski also swam to an exciting second place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke.

The following swimmers made national qualifying times: James Wheeler (200 yard butterfly), Kelcy Newman (500 yard freestyle, 200 yard freestyle and 200 yard breaststroke), Eri Akiyama (200 yard butterfly and 400 Individual Medley) and Bryan Koscinski (200 yard breaststroke). The men's 400 medley and freestyle relays both qualified for Nationals. The relay teams consisted of fast swims by James Wheeler, Tim Manoogian, Bryan Koscinski and Joey Lehner.

The HCCC swim team will travel to SUNY Delhi on Saturday, December 1, 2007 for their next meet.

November 3, 2007

The HCCC swim team traveled to Genesee Community College for the Harvest Invitational. The Generals swam past the competition to bring home three first place finishes by Eri Akiyama, Kelcy Newman and Tim Manoogian in the 100 yard butterfly, 100 yard breaststroke and 50 yard freestyle, respectively.

The following swimmers also made national qualifying times: Kelcy Newman (200 yard freestyle and 100 yard breaststroke), Tim Manoogian (50 and 100 yard freestyle), Eri Akiyama (100 yard butterfly), Erin Moloney (100 yard freestyle) and Bryan Koscinski (100 yard breaststroke).

2007 HCCC Athletic Awards

Christina Dunadee, Ilion, received the Nancy Fabozzi Award, given to Herkimer County Community College's female student-athlete who displays the highest level of sportsmanship, dedication and commitment to her team and the College's athletic program. A senior, Dunadee is a three-sport athlete on the women's soccer, softball and Swimming & Diving teams. Dunadee came in first place in the 200-yard freestyle, second in the 200-yard breaststroke, second in the 100-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Mountain Valley Conference Championships. She has set numerous school records for Swimming & Diving, and was recently named to the National Dean's List. "Chrissie excels in sports and academics. Her work ethic and dedication is quite evident to the team and sport," said swim coach Laura Gilliam.

February 17-18, 2007
at Monroe Community College (Rochester, NY)

The Herkimer County Community College women's swim team placed fourth at the Region III/Northeast District Championships held at Monroe Community College February 17-18. Bianca Barbato, Eri Akiyama, Chrissie Dunadee and Samantha Mancuso finished in second place in the 200-yeard freestyle relay. The women also finished third in the 400-yard medley and freestyle relays. Samantha Mancuso earned several individual honors including fourth place in the 500-yard freestyle, second place in the 100-yard backstroke and fourth place in the 200-yard backstroke. Chrissie Dunadee placed fifth in the 100-yard freestyle event. The women's team also received the Most Improved Women's Team award for more than tripling their team score from the previous year. The team will compete in the 2007 NJCAA national Swimming & Diving and diving championships March 8-11 at Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY.

The men's team finished tenth with James Wheeler, Scott Sterling and Alex Sike competing. Wheeler took ninth in the 50-yard freestyle, eighth in the 200-yard freestyle, and 12th in the 100-yard freestyle. Sike finished seventh and Sterling finished ninth in the 100-yard backstroke.

James Wheeler swam to a first place finish in the 100-yard freestyle. Samantha Mancuso and Chrissie Dunadee finished second and third, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle event. Both had national qualifying times. Dunadee also placed second in the 100-yard backstroke, another national qualifying time. Bianca Barbato placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke qualifying her for nationals. The women's 200-yard freestyle relay, with Bianca Barbato, Eri Akiyama, Chrissie Dunadee and Samantha Mancuso, swam to a second place finish.

HCCC Men's and Women's swim team competed against SUNY Delhi and SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at Delhi. Samantha Mancuso, Chrissie Dunadee and James Wheeler all made national qualifying times in the 50 yard freestyle event. Samantha Mancuso also qualified for nationals in the 100 yard backstroke.
