Program History
In only four seasons, the Herkimer County Community College Women's Lacrosse team has won two Region III championships, has twice placed third and once placed fourth in the NJCAA national championship tournament, and has been named NJCAA Academic Team of the Year four times.
The 2006 women's lacrosse team broke all HCCC records with 13 victories, a Region III championship, 16 Academic All-Americans, and being named the NJCAA Academic All-American Team-of-the-Year.With a record of 13-1, the Generals' only loss was to CCBC Catonsville in the NJCAA semi-finals.
Sixteen players on the 2006 team were named Academic All-Americans by the National Junior College Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association, the largest number to receive this award in the history of the program.
In 2005, the Generals' record was 12-1 and the team set a national record with 14 student-athletes named Academic All-Americans.
Herkimer's women's lacrosse program was started in 2004 under the leadership of coach Paul Wehrum who had previously coached the men's lacrosse team. Under Coach Wehrum, the men's lacrosse team won 191 consecutive games in Region III from 1984 until his final men's game in 2003, and won eight national championships. In 2006, Wehrum retired from Herkimer after 27 years teaching and coaching lacrosse.
Herkimer alumnus and former lacrosse standout Brandi Ostrander ('05) replaced Wehrum as head coach for the 2007 season. Ostrander was a starting player on the inaugural team in 2004, and a member of the Region III championship team in 2005. After serving as assistant coach under Ostrander, Dianna Ste-Marie has been hired as head coach beginning with the 2008 season.
